CHAPTER 11

“I just ordered a large pizza, and you’re welcome to have some,” I told Emily as she settled into my couch. “I haven’t eaten since tea at Angie’s and I’m dying.”

Minette had already eaten. Sitting cross-legged on my coffee table, stuffed with blueberries and contented as could be, she began to regale Emily with her keen sense of intuition. Annabel, Maya, Angie, and Harry—they were all liars in one sense or another, or at least they were holding something back, not telling the full truth. Mary Davidson also knew more than she’d been willing to say. “Even Jack lies,” Minette said. “They all have secrets.”

“Does Jack know he’s lying?” Emily asked.

“Maybe he’s afraid,” I said. I stuck out my hand. “Give me that wine bottle.” I debated telling her about seeing Surette and decided against it. Then I told myself I hadn’t really seen him. He wasn’t a stupid man and he wouldn’t risk returning to Smithwell. I’d had him on my brain lately, that was all, and seeing him was a trick of my anxious mind. That had to be it.

Emily gave me the pinot and I smiled in anticipation. Pizza, wine, and desperate hunger—was there a finer combination?

“What is Mary Davidson lying about?” she asked.

“She’s not lying exactly. Whatever she knows, she didn’t want to say in front of Angie.” I stopped peeling the wrap from the bottleneck and looked Emily square in the eye. “She didn’t kill Deborah, I know that. She couldn’t have because wasn’t there. But what if she’s stolen some of Angie’s things and wants to confess?”

“If she wants to confess, she’ll tell Angie, not you.”

“Good point. Then again, she doesn’t want to lose her job and I could act as a buffer between her and Angie.” I was twisting the corkscrew into the bottle when I heard a knock. Pizza! I dashed for the front door as though I hadn’t eaten in days and flung it open.

“Hello, Kate. You look like you were expecting someone else.”

Harry. What was he doing here? “We just talked,” I said, rudeness inching into my voice. “I’m about to eat, Harry, and I really need to eat.”

“Mind if I come in for a moment?” he pleaded. He took one step over the threshold and rested his shoulder on the door jamb. “Five minutes of your time? I gave you my time.”

He glanced at Emily as she walked past the door. My friend was letting him know I wasn’t alone in the house. Unlike Angie, I’d had good luck in the friendship department.

“We should talk somewhere private, though,” he added. “Five minutes, that’s all.”

“Two minutes. Emily and I are about to eat.” I waved him back outside, much to his shock, and stood there, my arms folded across my chest, my expression stern. Don’t speak hogwash to me, Harry. Spill it.

“We’re going to talk out here?”

“This is as private as it gets. I’m not making Emily leave. I invited her over.”

“Why are you being so hostile?”

“I have a feeling you know why.
